Cambridge United: Oct / Nov 2012

Hello friends and greetings from Canada as I bring you another update in my FMS featuring Cambridge United. Before I go on with the story please rest assured that my game is free of any FMRTE? Genies’s? (if I’ve got that right) or any other kind of add on’s or editors. Any regular readers will know I’ve had so many computer problems that I don’t download anything except of course the game itself from Steam. With that out of the way let’s continue.

The first game of our Fall schedule saw us travel to Hartlepool where Conor Newton gave us the lead after just 5 minutes at which point we retreated like a tortoise into its shell and ended up back pedalling for the rest of the game allowing the home side to equalize and take two points from us.

We returned to The Abbey Stadium for our next Game against Bristol Rovers where unlike the tortoise performance previously we were more like raging bulls. Will Packard got things moving with a precision pass to Will Keane who fired the ball cleanly past the Rovers keeper like a young Michael Owen. Scott Wootten headed in the second after 21 minutes then Keane added his second meeting a low driving cross from strike partner Rasmus Falk. The young Dane would set up Conor Newton in a similar style for goal number four then deservedly got on the score sheet himself with Shane Williams acting as the architect. The second half was not quite as frantic but two further goals came both from the spot converted by Newton and substitute Jacob Walcott to complete an outstanding performance.

Next up was a JPT clash against Hereford where me made a judgement call and sent in the “reserves” who performed admirably and in the end were unfortunate to lose 2-1. We suffered the same fate in the following game at home to Brighton where poor marking allowed the visiting team to snatch the winner late in the game and leave us nine points adrift of leaders Brentford.

After throwing away our previous game we looked far more solid at the back for our trip to Watford with Rasmus Falk getting the only goal of the game with a superb individual effort. Substitute Oliver Nicholas made a last gasp tackle late in the game to ensure we took all three points.

Due to fatigue and with the exception of Scott Wootten it was a very different starting eleven that took the field away to Southend. It was a game highlighted by missed opportunities with Southend taking the lead against the run of play. Striker Davide Patrucci finally found his scoring touch coming up with an equalizer in the 70th minute.

At home to Norwich we fell behind just before half time when a defensive mix up allowed the visiting team to take the lead. Shane Williams fired home the equalizer early in the second half but it was very much a rear guard action that allowed us to secure a point.

We stayed at home for our next game against Gillingham with Jacob Walcott playing in the ML role giving us the early lead with a curling shot into the roof of the net after just four minutes. Fifteen minutes later a beautifully placed cross by RB Moloney was met of the volley by Walcott and it was 2-0. Gabriel Gomez got his first goal for the club after 30 minutes with a shot from inside the box and we took that commanding lead into half time. Gillingham would pull one back in the 70th minute but that goal was sandwiched by goals from Wootten and Nicholas who both headed in from set pieces for a much needed victory.

It was a very much energized team that took the field at Abbey Stadium for our first round FA Cup tie with Torquay United. Although the League Two team gave a good account of themselves it was first half goals by Gomez and Newton that secured the victory and allowed us to move on to the next round.

Next up was a trip to play 5th place Barnsley who sprinted out to a 2-0 lead within 30 minutes before MR Szczepaniak pulled one back to keep us in contention. The second half was highlighted by a series of missed chances by the front two of Falk and Ciftci and it was left to substitute Connor Newton to rescue a point for us late in the game.

The following Saturday we travelled to Wiltshire to play Swindon Town at The County Ground. We got off to literally a catastrophic start as Swindon laid siege to our penalty area scoring three goals in within the first twenty minutes with Rasmus Falk managing to put us on the scoreboard. A well worked play the left flank ended with well struck shot by Fofana into the roof of the net to initiate the fight back and we levelled the game through Falk who turned his marker and cleanly placed the ball past the keeper into the Swindon goal. Eleven minutes into the second half Shane Williams through ball split the Swindon defence and Fofana was on hand with curling shot that flew into the top right hand corner to give us the lead for the first time. The remainder of the second half was far less exciting than the first with the score staying the same but the fans enjoyed the trip back to East Anglia following a memorable come from behind victory.

The final game of the month was at home to Cardiff which lacked on goals but made up for it on end to end entertainment. Jacob Walcott managed to break the deadlock early in the second half with some fancy foot work that fooled both defender and keeper enabling us to take three valuable points.

Results Summary

We only suffered two defeats over the past couple of months and have played very well in our last 5 games which is encouraging.

League Table

Going into December we find ourselves in third place which is above expectations and if we keep up this good from perhaps a play off spot is a reasonable assumption as we head towards the mid point of the season.

Just a quick piece of other news, Alan Shearer who is one of my all time favorite players became manager of Leeds United.

Fixtures

We start next month off with an FA Cup tie against Barrow before a key game against promotion rivals Colchester.

Thanks for reading — enjoy your weekend and Ana good luck to Barcelona. Of course I’ll be supporting Man United whom I’m cheered for when won the old European Cup at Wembley back in ’68 and hopefully can produce the same kind of performance this time around.

    Well done Kevin!

Your new signings are doing very well and this has been another great two month period for you, I am glad you are still fighting it out at the top and I am sure by the end of the season you will be looking at going to the Championship, one way or another! :D

      Hi Sibo
Appreciate your confidence in the team. I hope to prove you right :)

Great form again Kevin, very weird to see you draw and lose then thrash sides. But you’re at a higher level now where certain opponents are a class above the rest. I agree with your evaluation of continuing the form and getting a play-off spot. Although a little luck may even bring about automatic promotion so who know. Btw that Swindon match must have been a stunner and nervy affair at the same time. :)

ps. I’m hoping United go the distance tomorrow and can’t wait to relax with a glass of wine which will get spilled everywhere when they score lol :)

      Hi Darren
The Swindon match was tremendoudly exciting and you are right about these last set of games. The results are all over the place and I have no idea why?

Well done on your progress with Cambridge, might be able to sneak an automatic spot.

I notice you have brought Connor Newton, He seems to be scoring quite a lot of goals for your team. I recently sold him on my newcastle game to Coventry. Do you think he can play at a higher level than league 1?

      Hi Seb S
Thanks for the comment and the question. I really like Conor Newton and I’m confident he could easily play in the Championship. He’s one I will keep for sure.

Great couple of months Kevin, your side are very free scoring and that makes for an entertaining side. You’re right in there fighting it out for automatic promotion, and hopefully you can get ahead of Colchester in the next couple of months. Good luck!

    P.S COME ON BARCA!!!

      Hi Laxeyman
I knew you would say Barca :)
Yep, that Colchester game is going to be pretty key I feel.

That was a bit of a turbulent October, but you managed to keep the squad on task and settled down nicely in November. You’re still well within reach of the title, and worst case I could see you having to slog through a playoff. There were some great results in there, and I love your player selection (I’ve had Will Packerd and Oliver Nicholas in my old Salisbury story).

Keep up the great work, can’t wait for the game tomorrow!

      Hi Stromson
I think «slogging» it out describes the situation nicely. I like Packard — not great attributes but really contributes when he’s on the field

    Hey Kevin
Great results there, pretty good two months. Will Keane seems like a legend for you, he is so good. Weird to see Cardiff doing not too great, I would expect them to be in the playoffs or automatic promotion.
P.S. I will be supporting United as well, as I always do.

      Hi vaibhavc
Keane is a great player though he picked up a knock and is somehat off from. I was suprised to see Cardiff in League 1 too. Thanks for supporting Utd.

Great job Kevin, you did very well to come out like this from two very difficult months. I might be too optimistic but I believe that your team can get the title this season or at least fight for it until the last day of the campaign. Good luck to you and to Manchester United but we all know that I’ll be supporting Barcelona :)

      Hi Johnny
We did recover very well as at one point it looked like we were heading for mid table.

    Hey Kevin,

Your doing extremely well and I hope the wonderful form continues. Regrading the Champions League, I dislike both teams but I guess I would rather if Barcelona won since I’m a Liverpool fan. Good luck!

Thanks Sears. I’ll forgive you for cheering for Barca after such an eventful week on FMS :)

Thanks Kevin and good luck to you, lets hope the best team wins. :)

Back to your story and a really good run of results, winning by seven goals was really good so well done!

Top two go up automatically? (Sorry, I forget the lower leagues very quickly!!).

If so you have a good chance at maybe getting one place, but still a long way to go. You are very free scoring so at least goals are not a problem, just need to work on the defence a bit.

    Good luck!!

      28 мая, 2011 at 09:26

      Hi Ana

I think it’s two go up automatically and a third through the play offs. I thought I had the defence figured out but it’s still not as good as the teams above me.

You’re doing well Kevin, Newton and Keane (Falk and Fofana too) are giving you the goals you need, just some draws costing your team valuable points, you’re not far behind 2nd, if you can finish there then you should get automatic promotion i think?

Shearer went to Leeds? In my save he’s managing Southampton

I’ll be cheering Man Utd on I guess, though the game is at 2.45 am here, guess i’ll have to sacrifice some sleep :P

    • Kevin

      28 мая, 2011 at 09:29

      Hi Cs Atlantis
Yes it two that go up automatically so the game aginst Colchester is key. Shearer started his career at Southampton so that would make more sense in your game. Good luck with staying awake!

    Hi Kevin,

Pretty good results there and an automatic promotion spot is up for grabs. There are lots of different scorers and at the scoring responsibilities are shared by different players. There can be no lack of goals from your side looking at those big wins. Your attack can be your key as long as you don’t concede too many. Good luck for the rest of the games. I am hopeful you will get promoted.

    • Kevin

      28 мая, 2011 at 09:31

      Thanks Lye
Mt attack is way bettter than my defence so I hope the back four don’t cost me promotion in the end.

Brilliant 7-0 win there Kevin, and your side look like they have gone from strength to strength after that. Brentford look like they have it all sealed up, but if you can turn some of those draws into wins, you’ll be well ahead of Colchester come May.

    Good luck mate :)
