All eyes will be on Parc Olympique Lyonnais when Lyon and Nice square off against each other in the opening match of the Ligue 1 round 22. Les Gones are eyeing their fourth consecutive win in all competitions, but this game will be anything but a walk in the park for Pierre Sage’s troops. Corentin Tolisso limped off with injury in the last league match, with Orel Mangala likely to step up. Jake O’Brien serves a one-game ban due to the accumulation of yellow cards.

Les Aiglons, on the other hand, experienced all sorts of problems at the back in a 3-2 loss to Monaco, but despite the defeat, they are still sitting in second place in the standings. Anyhow, both teams to score betting option should be considered as both Lyon and Nice have been involved in some high-scoring games of late.

Olympique Lyonnais: Pride of the Rhône-Alpes Region

Founded in 1950, Olympique Lyonnais, also known as Lyon or OL, is one of the most prominent names in French football. The team smartly dressed in white and blue is famed for its amazing performances domestically and internationally. Lyon's domination in the French Ligue 1 during the early 2000s is particularly etched in the memories of avid football followers.

The Glorious Years of Olympique Lyonnais

The golden era of Olympique Lyonnais started in 2001 under the leadership of manager Paul Le Guen. This period saw Lyon lift seven consecutive Ligue 1 titles - a dominance that established their reputation as a dominant force in French football. The likes of Juninho Pernambucano, Sidney Govou, and Florent Malouda became legendary figures for their pivotal roles in establishing Lyon's hegemony.

Olympique Lyonnais on the International Stage

Whilst its domestic presence is unquestionable, Lyon has made formidable strides on the international stage. The team reached the Champions League semi-finals in 2010 - their best-ever finish in Europe's elite club competition. Transitioning from their national success to a competitive European side has not been without bumps, but Lyon's determination to succeed is evident, culminating in their most recent achievement: reaching the 2020 Champions League semi-finals.

Olympique de Nice: The Eagles of the French Riviera

Just as Lyon dominates the southeast, Olympique de Nice, or Nice, rules the shorelines of the French Riviera. Established in 1904, Nice is one of the oldest football clubs in France. Adorned in red and black, Nice has a rich history and an enduring spirit, which have earned them the moniker 'The Eagles'.

Nice's Historical Successes

In the initial years post World War II, Nice enjoyed tremendous success. The club won four Ligue 1 titles during this period, establishing themselves as a major power in French football. Names like Antoine Bonifaci, Hassan Akesbi and Vic Nurenberg are still cherished by Nice enthusiasts for their exceptional performances during this golden era.

Reviving the Glory: Modern Era of Nice

Nice's fortunes took a meandering path following their initial period of success. However, they steadily revived their status in the last decade and have since reestablished themselves as a strong club in Ligue 1. The club hit the headlines in 2016 when they finished the league at a commendable third position, their best finish since the 1975-76 season.

Final Thoughts

Olympique Lyonnais and Nice, without any doubt, both hold a special place in the annals of French football. These teams have had their fair share of ups and downs over the past decades, but their enduring perseverance and determination make them a joy to follow. Regardless of the results on the pitch, Olympique Lyonnais and Nice have woven themselves into the rich tapestry of French and international football. Their legacies live on, celebrating the passion, determination and love for the beautiful game.
