FMS Special: Football Manager 2013 Player Development

A few weeks back Soccerlens posed a question to FMS, ‘how does one get the best performances in FM13 out of Marouane Fellaini?’ An interesting topic and one that got us thinking. After much deliberation and then testing I wrote two articles for Soccerlens on player development, below is an overview and sneak peak.

Part one sees me layout a few theories, using a player over 21 and hotshot under 21 for testing. Below is a sneak peak from that article.

I have just taken charge of Manchester United in FM13 and my first signing is Fellaini, a big bulky midfielder with more strength than the Hulk. But how should Fellaini be deployed, every other action I take will evolve around that one question.

While Fellaini’s strength and defensive abilities scream ball winning midfielder, I feel he can offer something very special going forward. Who else has such power and ability to hold off any defender? Fellaini is such a rare gem and assigning him a defensive role maybe wasteful….

Part two reveals the results of my research, after testing my theories on two Guinea Pigs I share all including stats and attribute increases.

The 18 year old poacher joined my Newcastle United side from Sao Paulo in 2012. I had many theories on how to develop Ademilson but my main aim was to increase some troubling attributes. I managed this through individual training; Ademilson had fairly low pace, dribbling and first touch for a poacher…

Ademilson’s second season just epitomized his development to date. Confidence carried forward from the first season resulted in….

Two really impressive articles and if the Sun ever needs a football writer I’ll put a word in for you :D.
Seriously impressive development of the big man. I got sucked into the trap of immediately playing him defensively and while he was impressive I knew I wasn’t getting the most out of him, considering he rarely got in the opposition box despite his 90%+ header completion. With no goals in October, I overacted and then threw into the attacking mid spot, where he seemed like a fish up a tree at times because while he was joining in with the attacking more, he didn’t get back and tackle as much. Your article could be the solution, although I avoided the B2B for him previously because players playing this role tend to just slip out the game at times.

Haha thanks mate. Its tough developing players, while what I wrote about Fellaini is completely true, you can’t do that with every player or the tactic won’t work. I for instance have Rodrigo who should be used upfront to develop best, but I use him from AML, he plays worse and won’t develop as well but with my squad and tactics its just what needs doing.

I liked the articles . As a similar expriment i have usef Stevie G as a right back . Provides great passes to sterling and also makes good foreard runs and scores goals . I dont expect much of him defensively but hr clears ball with header .. Just good use

Thanks, its always fun to experiment with a players role, I’m still a fan of making roles around the tactic and not the player though.
