Kevin’s Story Update: Misery in Montevideo…

Hello friends and welcome back to my Football Manager Story which left off last time with me resigning from Vancouver and taking an Air Canada flight to the southern hemisphere. This will be merely a placeholder update just so everyone knows the story is still alive as the past week has been incredibly busy due to coordinating a project that involved people from coast to coast on the North American continent.

So where did that Air Canada flight end up? As most of you will have probably figured out it landed in Sydney, Australia with the connecting flight to Western Australia and the home of the Perth Glory. Having been convinced the manager’s job would be mine I had resigned from the Whitecaps….

….but after days of waiting I didn’t get it. What?

Devastated I took another flight, this time taking me to Montevideo, Uruguay, where I spent the next several weeks unemployed and miserable hanging around the Plaza Independencia having failed to secure vacancies at Penarol, River Plate, Atletico Miniero in Brazil, Everton in Chile and even got laughed at by Salt Lake City back in the MLS who had fired their manager.

Then suddenly when all seemed lost, came a job offer out of the blue. Off to the airport boarding flight LA905 to Santiago, Chile where I changed planes switching to flight QF322 and 24 hours and 35 minutes later I was once again starring down at one on the most iconic structures in the world but this time I was not connecting onwards.

A quick taxi ride to Allianz Stadium, the home of my new employers…

To be continued….

Thanks for reading this quick update.

COME ON ENGLAND!!

Wow, can’t believe you got rejected by that many clubs! Sydney are a pretty good club and I think you’ve got a shot of winning the league straiht away.
    Good luck

      Hi Karl
Me neither after 5 straight MLS Cups though I got a job in the end :)

Nice to have an A-League story, I’m a fan of A-League team Wellington Phoenix (based in New Zealand).
See if you can use the junior marquee spot, and try to keep hold of gun striker Bruno Cazarine.

      Hi Bevan
As you are a fan in real life I hope I can bring you a decent story here. Thanks for the tips but unfortunately Cazaribe was sold to Huddersfield. My loss by the looks of his stats :(

    Hi Kevin,
I haven’t commented in a while but have read all the posts on this site. I really enjoyed your MLS save as I was doing one as well ( not as good as yours though ). It’s nice to see an A — League story here, and especially Sydney as we have some friends who have recently moved out there so I will hopefully visit them and watch Sydney play. Good luck :)

      Welcome back Frank!!
I’m delighted you enjoyed the MLS save, I think it’s my best work to date on a story.I’m happy you like my new team and hopefully I do well to pump up some excitement for your future trip Down Under.

    Wow Kevin,
Nice to see you getting a job in Australia, just like you wanted.

What is going on with your reputation? I mean getting laughed by Salt lake city after beating them 5 years in a row, weird. Maybe a glitch.

Anyway good luck in your new club :)

    • Kevin

      24 июня, 2012 at 11:27

      Hello Ivo
Yeah, I did want an Aussie team but really thought I wasn’t going to get one. My rep is World Class after 5 MLS titles so as you say it is wierd why I got turned down so many times.

Australia! I’m also a Phoenix fan and I live in NZ. Awesome to see some Australasian action going on. The Brisbane Roar is the team to beat down under, so good luck!

    Hi Daniel

I was on my way to NZ before diverting to Canada where I’ve been for 20 years now. Glad you like the new story and I’m really excited about the challenge.

Maybe you need to rethink the aftershave you’re using ;)

Amazing how so many clubs could turn you down after your record. Montevideo always brings a smile to my face, ever since the day I heard the name massacred on CNN Sport. It was a definite but amusing crime. I was irked last night by the ITV coverage of the Spain match, where they calling Jordi Alba, Geordie Alba. I thought he must have come from Newcastle ;)

Good luck with Sydney, who should be a strong team in that league.

      Hi Ziggy
I can see how CNN would mess up the pronunciation…LOL!
Was very surprised by all the rejections too but in the end I managed to arrive in Australia and Sydney is a good team to take over.

    Hi Kevin,

I think you have secured a really good job there. I have no experience of managing in Australia so it will be interesting to see how you get on! Good luck with the new job!

    • Kevin

      24 июня, 2012 at 12:24

      Hi mike25g
Thanks for leaving a comment and the well wishes. This league is all brand new to me as well :) Should be interesting.

Congrats on landing that job Kevin, Sydney FC won’t regret the choice, I’m sure of that. Best of luck for England tonight! ;)

    • Kevin

      24 июня, 2012 at 16:35

      Thanks Johnny
Looking forward to the challenge, because that’s exactly what is is with this league as we shall see.

I managed Sydney FC for a short stint down in the Forum ( https://footballmanagerstory.com/forum/index.php?topic=1199.0 )

It is really good down there and I would have stayed longer if it weren’t for my slow computer,

but good luck, I am sure you will enjoy it and will rip up the league :)

    • Kevin

      24 июня, 2012 at 16:36

      Hey Sammy

Thanks for the insight on your game and the well wishes.

Slightly silly how somebody of your reputation wouldn’t get considered for several jobs, something to be worked on for FM13, but I am sure this story will be absolutely brilliant.
I know NOTHING about Australian footy, so how would you classify Sydney, relegation candidates? Title contenders?
Yeah, let’s all hope the best for England, task should be made a lot easier when Ballotelli gets sent off… :)

    • Kevin

      24 июня, 2012 at 16:38

      Hi saltwater

Have to agree with you as my rep is now World Class but yet I struggled to find work?

I dont know too much about the A-league though I think Sydney is one of the better teams but are currently struggling in my save.

      Ballotelli off…love it :)

So this time you have a new adventure in Australia. This will be interesting and I can’t wait to see how well your team performs there.

    • Kevin

      25 июня, 2012 at 09:31

      Hi Tegar
Yep, I’m heading Down Under — should be quite the challenge

You got rejected by a Australian club but got the job in another one. I guess Perth Glory is going to regret that decision. Good luck for your new club.

    • Kevin

      25 июня, 2012 at 09:32

      Hello Lye
It was quite shocked to get rejected by Perth as for sure I thought I’d easily get the job

  18. Dan

    25 июня, 2012 at 13:15

    Hey Kevin,
At least 1 club had the sense to actually employ you! At least now you can show Perth what they’re missing! Sounds interesting and looking forward to your first Australian post.

    • Kevin

      25 июня, 2012 at 19:26

      Cheers Dan
I’m looking forward to playing in another interesting league

  19. Robert

    25 июня, 2012 at 13:39

I would have loved to see you managing at Perth since that’s where i live but i guess any team in the a-league is awesome, good luck in Sydney :)

    • Kevin

      25 июня, 2012 at 19:29

      G’day Robert

Greetings from Canada and thanks for leaving a comment. I would have preferred Perth first or even Gold Coast though Sydney have an historically strong team I think? I’m looking forward to this Down Under challenge

  20. Federico

    25 июня, 2012 at 16:11

Too bad you got rejected from Peñarol, that’s my team!!! I’m playing a save now with them, dominating completely uruguay and south america. I even trashed barcelona in last world club cup 4-0 (I believe they didn’t come with all their potential).
It’s a good team to manage, you can buy very cheap players and after a good season sell them for 4,5M to Brazil or Europe. In 2 years you become a top team in south america. I believe the only down is having 4 rivals (the other top teams), it reduces a lot the chances of getting cheap good local players. But getting very good african, argentinian and brazil youngsters mean than 3 years later they become local =)

    • Kevin

      25 июня, 2012 at 19:32

      Hi Federico

Thanks for the comment and the insight into your Penarol save. After Perth turned me down the thought of «playing» in Montivideo was quite exhilirating but as it tunred out I had to head back across the Pacific. Good luck amigo!

    26 июня, 2012 at 07:48

I thought you landed a job in Uruguay from watching the title :P, good luck with Sydney, must be quite weird going back to Australia again after getting turned down by Perth, perhaps you can show them that rejecting you was not a good decision!

    • Kevin

      26 июня, 2012 at 08:41

      Hi CsAtlantis

Yeah, the title was a bit of a «red herring» and Australia was always my intended target after getting rejected by Canada. Get away from it all with a fresh start.

Am sorry about England, I guess there is a knowing inevitably when they go to penalties, but I hope your were not to down after the game.

Good luck in Australia! I tried it and dint really like it so am looking forward to seeing if you enjoy more, should be very interesting and am looking forward to it!!

      29 июня, 2012 at 00:18

      Thanka Ana

England did exactly what I expected them to do which was to exit on penalties.

The Australian league is a little weird so let’s se how long I last…LOL
