Football Manager 2012 guide to win with Malaga

Hey guys, I have a special post for you today packed with lots of FM12 tips and goodies. My ‘Football Manager 2012 guide to win with Malaga’ includes everything that I feel was important to my recent success in La Liga and the Champions League. We have my FM 2012 best tactic, Football Manager 2012 training, how I approach my matches and the all important FM 2012 players. I will start this post with how I start each new save, like my tactic and FM12 training downloads. Then we’ll move onto coaches, players and a lot of FM12 tips. This may be a long post so grab a cup of tea, can of Coke or maybe something a little stronger. :)

Football Manager 2012 guide to win with Malaga

As mentioned I want to structure this guide the same way you should start a brand new save, the number one rule is don’t press continue! OK, you do have to press continue but not until you’ve had rid of the dead weight players and back room staff, then followed my steps below.

Football Manager 2012 training schedules and coaches

FM 2012 training schedules are more important than you might think, don’t just stick with the default settings. You can either look through an abundance of great schedules found by Johnny in his ‘Best training schedules for Football Manager 2012’ post or just download the one I chose. This was made by Maestro Ugo and includes schedules for almost every position consisting of both senior and youth schedules. The development I have seen between using a default schedule and Maestro Ugo’s is simply incredible so download it by clicking here.

After you have assigned each player the correct schedule you should select the most talented and ambitious squad members for some individual attention. Doing this increases wonderkids development like you wouldn’t believe so take the time to do so. One example is Kovacic who I bought during my first season. I always move my best youngsters ‘individual training intensity’ to heavy as they don’t seem to mind the workload and it develops them much quicker. I thought Kovacic needed some work on his dribbling so trained him individually on that and you should also retrain a players position if they are not natural in your preferred area.

Schedules and individual training are nothing without the right coaches and back room staff. I always have at least three scouts, a wonderful assistant manager and then one coach for every single training category. That means two goalkeeping coaches, two fitness coaches, one attacking coach, one defensive coach, one coach for tactics and two technical coaches. I assign each coach one category (their best obviously) and a good indication of that is the star rating each category then receives when you’ve assigned your coaches their assignments. These need to be a minimum of 3.5* but four and above is preferable.

If you are struggling to find the right coaches below are mine, but its all common sense really, just do a filtered staff search for the staff role and attributes you are looking for.

My FM 2012 best tactic

My tactic is a 4-5-1 and almost identical to my Arsenal tactic which provides free flowing football and attacking flair. You can read about my best FM 2012 tactic by clicking here and the download is available at the bottom of that page. Just note the important changes and tips below.

  • I always keep the attacking strategy at home or away to opposition I expect to beat.
  • I change my starting strategy to counter when I don’t expect victory, or come against the big teams at home and tough away matches. Basically if I’m in doubt I switch to counter. A good indicator is the pre-match odds, if you are favourites you want to be attacking the game, if not it may be better to hang back a little.
  • You should assign your striker a role that suits him best, I had RVP as complete forward with Arsenal to suit the tactic and his style…but I only have poachers with my Malaga team so changed the lone striker to poacher role.
  • Don’t change any other roles or you will be messing with the dynamics of the tactic.
  • Make sure your DCR can pass and the general defence has pace.
  • The LW and RW  inside forwards need to be able to score, in fact I would say finishing is more important than crossing as they cut inside and rarely stick to the flanks as you can see below.

Football Manager 2012 guide to win with Malaga — the team

As opposed to droning on about what you should look for in a team, all I will say is the mix needs to be right and you should have two first team XI’s. That is right, every position should have at least two players to fill it. I usually try and get good youth in to be used as backup but you can see my first XI used mainly in the league or against Europe’s elite and second XI used in cup matches and the Champions League group stages below. A little tip, click on the players names to see their profiles.

Football Manager 2012 guide to win with Malaga — general hints and tips
  • I always ask my assistant or best tactical coach to do the pre-match ‘opposition instructions’ for me. While this leads to a lot of commands it seems to work very well with my attacking tactic and strong team.
  • Team talks are very important and I have written an FM 2012 team talk guide that you can read by clicking here.
  • If I expect to win but my players aren’t showing much attacking threat in game I use touchline shouts ‘get ball forward’ and ‘get stuck in’.
  • If I am holding onto a lead I switch to ‘counter’ strategy’ and shout ‘pass into space’ and ‘hassle opponents’. I only do this with a maximum of 25 minutes left.
  • When I reach the last three months of a season I tend to call a team meeting. If we are up for a lot of silverware I encourage the team by saying they have done well but we need to keep going. I then ask the captain and room what they think followed by saying I am happy with the reaction (assuming it all went well.) This usually gives the players one last boost to perform well.
  • 85% of matches won from a losing position in the second half are down to super subs. I reckon by using the correct substitutes I gain an extra 10 points a season minimum. If you need that impact, change a winger, striker and advanced playmaker for players that are explosive around the 60-65 minute mark.

Well I think that’s about everything, I’m sure I’ve missed something but we’ll call it a day here. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask and I look forward to reading your comments as always.

    Thanks heaps Darren!

I play basically the same tactic as your Manchelona, with a few of Johnny’s changes like no long range shooting and 2 inside forwards like you have here. I might try Kovacic and Badelj on AP-attack as their ratings aren’t too great, though Kov is gettin a lot of assists now. Niang is scoring over a goal a game as complete forward, and getting quite a few assists to my IFs so I don’t know if poacher is best for him, I guess i’ll give it a try. Hazard and Lucas Moura as the wingers are worth what you pay for them, especially Hazard. Train him in finishing and he’s awesome. I’ll see whether your changes improve my team :)

No problem Nathan, with regards to Moura and Hazard, I attempted to buy both in my next season and lets just say I had to settle for one but he was well worth the cash. :)

Hope it was Hazard :) he’s averaging 8 in my game, though Lucas is a tad younger and hopefully will reach that level. If you ever manage to sign Gotze tell me how he does, i think Dortmund rate him at around 100 million and he doesn’t mind staying since they give him champions league :(

I was actually in for Gotze and had £55 million accepted but he wouldn’t agree personal terms with me.

Lol, I do the complete opposite to you when you change your starting strategy. When I play the big teams, I set the strategy as attacking, and I sometimes change it when I’m playing against the weaker teams as they set out defensively and tend to hit me on the counter regularly. Keeping the attacking strategy, I beat Real Madrid at home 3-2, drew away 0-0,and beat them in the Spanish Cup final 2-0. I beat Barcelona 2-1 :) But lost 4-0 at home lol. I also gave Valencia a good thumping — we beat them at home 7-3. Btw, if your wondering, I’m managing Athletic and I’m using the Arsenal tactic you created! I finished 3rd in my first season, and won the Spanish Cup. We were shocking in Europe though :D

Thanks for this guide, will help some people hugely! Cheers mate

      20 ноября, 2011 at 17:22

I can see your logic Sears, I have a solid back four and mass creation upfront so they can work their way through a deep defensive line and hold their own in defence when under pressure…I think its more about the players I have that makes my starting strategy and playing on the counter against weaker teams does work well too as the it draws them out of position so you can exploit the space. Sounds like you’re having a good time with your fav Spanish club! Well done.

Great guide. Weiss is a fantastic player and he really improves well. What if you are playing a team, and you expect to have more possession and chances, what strategy and shouts do you use? Would you go control?

    • Darren Smith

      20 ноября, 2011 at 18:11

Yeah he is a fantastic player! As for the shouts in that situation, I’d probably use retain possession and play through defence but I wouldn’t switch my strategy. To be fair I often find that not having enough possession and not been a threat going forward come hand in hand and if you tell them to get the ball forward and get stuck in they kind of wake up a little.

Good that you ended it early, I thought there was another page again! :P

I like the suggestion on training schedules, I also have been using Maestro Ugo’s schedules since FM11

On the shouts that can be used, I find that using clear ball to flanks is helpful on the counter attack to get the ball quickly to your wingers (I assume it also works for inside forwards?)

Malaga are lucky enough that they have money to spend, but I think you have spent very reasonably (probably a lot less than Barca or Real) and built a title winning squad!

Do you do all your team talks personally? I find that the assistant manager doesn’t do very well when he is left to do team talks so I tend to ask him to do the overall talk then work on individual/positional talks as required

Very well done Darren, glad to see you still have the time to do these helpful guides :D

      21 ноября, 2011 at 08:40

lol, yeah it was going to go on a little too much. :)

Those training schedules have been excellent for me, but I don’t use clear ball to flanks as half the time the long looping pass is intercepted. I prefer pass into space as it leads to more thought out attacks and less possession given away, for me anyway.

Any spending I have made has been heavily dampened by the sale of players. Last season I wasn’t far off breaking even in terms of transfers….but what the great finances does do is allow me big budgets to get my players early before I have to make a decision on who to sell. I do all my own team talks as I like to control what tone they are said in, but I do take the assistants advice into consideration.

Excellent post Darren, I bookmarked it for further reference ;) By the way, I’m using Ajinkx’s Training schedules but I might give Maestro Ugo’s a try at some point.

Do you shout «get the ball forward» the whole match ot just second half?

    Wery helpfull post BTW :)

    • Darren Smith

      21 ноября, 2011 at 21:40

I actually shout get the ball forward in first half if I’m not happy after 25 mins…I then just keep it that way. Glad you like the post.

As usual, a very informative post. Given me something to think about, especially having the full backs on support. Since the tactics creator came in, I’ve always put them on auto, but now that I think about it, when I was using the sliders, I tended to play a ‘role theory’ system and my full backs had the same mentality as the cm support.
Since changing to support, my team are much better at recycling possession. We close down much better as a unit in midfield and have more options to move the ball around. This is negating the effects I though it would have defensively and my full backs tend not to get knackered so quickly.
    Enjoy your gaming!

    • Darren Smith

      21 ноября, 2011 at 22:35

Thanks mate, while the full backs been used in supporting duty helps them get forward and support my attacking wingers…it does lead to them coming out of position and getting caught out now and then. That is one of the many reasons why I like to have a solid and quick back four.

Darren, any chance of a screenshot of your training levels?

I don’t want to do the download and copy scenario, last year my computer crashed after messing with editor and schedules and stuff, so now for piece of mind i like to set the sliders myself.

Even if you don’t want to post here, i can supply you an email or something.

    Thanks in advance

great post darren, i have one question for you i need a left inside forward and i plan on selling carzola should i buy weiss or should i wait one one year and try to get Shinji Kagawa

    • Darren Smith

      23 ноября, 2011 at 12:21

I wouldn’t recommend playing Weiss from the left, while he’d do OK the difference in his game is massive compared to when he starts from the right. I’d say that Kagawa is worth waiting for if you can…why not look at Lucas Moura to see if he’s affordable?

      • sachithyoda

        23 ноября, 2011 at 15:54

i meant right inside forward lol i bought willian on the left and he is a beast scored 22 and assisted 20 in 49 games. who do think is better on the right side and is there a better player for a right IF

        • Darren Smith

          23 ноября, 2011 at 16:01

They don’t come much better than Weiss on the right wing as inside forward, he’s been amazing for me, Weiss is better than Kagawa on the right so don’t wait for him, just sign Weiss.

          • sachithyoda

            25 ноября, 2011 at 10:46

Thanks, for the reply definitely gonna buy weiss.
i’m also looking for a left central defender(DC) for far i have Danny Wilson, Dedryck Boyata and Jean-Armel Kana-Biyik in mind, is there anyone better than these?
Jean-Armel Kana-Biyik team offered him to me for 3.3m should i buy him or someone else?

            25 ноября, 2011 at 11:46

No problem but defenders depend on who your looking for and which team you are….my best recommendation is Kara from Tromso.

    Hi Darren

Excellent work again with the mighty Malaga!

Next challenge for you would be Ajax system of the 1970’s

GK, RB, LB, SW, CB, CM, CM,CM, RW, LW, CF. Formation.

Your the only person I know who could make It work.

i have a question .. in what training category should i put the terquaristista (striker)….. it should b in fast or strong of masetro ugo’s and for deep lying maker(dm/mc) it should be dm or amc

    • Johnny Karp

      25 ноября, 2011 at 07:22

I’d put the trequartista in fast striker schedule, not sure about the midfielders because I don’t use Maestro Ugo’s training so I don’t know exactly how those schedules are.

      • Darren Smith

        25 ноября, 2011 at 11:53

Yeah the trequartista is best for fast striker schedule. However a deep lying playmaker needs a schedule somewhere in the middle of the two schedules mentioned so I’d recommend the DMC schedule but take a look yourself to be sure.

Thanks Darren for this. Watch Pitch size do you use for this..

    • Darren Smith

      25 ноября, 2011 at 19:21

Thanks Mark, pitch size doesn’t matter…this tactic can be used in multiple scenarios but I guess a smaller pitch would suit due to the short snappy passing and high def line (a longer pitch means the long ball could exploit your defence.)

Thanks I’m glad this has helped. As for Weiss, my main recommendation is to use him as inside forward from the right wing and offer plenty of game time…obviously do what I have with the training schedules etc and Weiss will take care of the rest, he’s been one of my most reliable players.

    • Darren Smith

Hi Darren, thanks for the post. i’m quite the noob to FM. so this is exactly what i need, or so i thought. playin newcastle, did all i could to get most players you have here. Missed out on some(couldn’t get’em or they wouldn’t join), but i believe i have good replacements. My line up as follows: GK(kameni) D(ostrzolek, colocini,s.taylor, vrsaljko) M(kovacic, tiote, badelj) A(kadlec, demba, weiss) and i have fierro, sanogo, boyata,r.toloi, verratti, bertolacci,G ramirez, romario among others..i’m into my third season. first season was disastrous, i was sacked twice, and finished 12th. Second season was better, but not much, finished 9th. I’m now into my third, and i feel it’s the same story playin out. starts with a bang, crushed opp for two games, then faded into mid table. I’ve never won against the top four, managed to draw only twice in 3 seasons! Your post has been my FM bible. but it doesn’t seem to work for me. Is there something inherently wrong with my save or does my team need more time?

    • Darren Smith

      18 февраля, 2012 at 12:39

Sorry to hear you are struggling Dave, I’d say that your team talks may be an issue, if struggling try and be more encouraging and not so harsh when losing. The team seems to be OK but maybe you need a little more quality at the back, I find that building from defense upwards is the best thing to do. Ultimately young players need time but I think you should be performing above the levels mentioned, its always tough when new to the game but what tactic are you using? If its the one listed here maybe try cutting back on the creative freedom and maybe even use the counter strategy away from home if you’re not doing so already.

      • dave

        18 февраля, 2012 at 17:21

Thanks for the unbelievably quick reply. Totally appreciate that. yup i been using the tactics here. basically it’s quite the carbon copy of everything. problem is i totally flopped against the top sides, home and away. the manchesters are steamrollering everyone, and i couldn’t even get close to a champions league spot. my team is totally inconsistent. i could be cruising for games and then lose at home to a bottom team! i feel the game is rigged in this way, you could be at the top of your game, then almost always you get stunned by relegation fighters. I could have put my whole squad on the field against their keeper, and i wouldn’t score half a goal. Thanks for your advice anyways, perhaps the team is still young, i’ll work on the team talks, and see if i could finally get the elusive Kara. I’ve spent much time assembling these players and staff, and am quite into the game, so its extremely frustrating to be seemingly getting nowhere. it does seem to get better though, as players mature, guess i’ll keep working on it. perhaps more than anything, i just want a listening ear. so thanks very much.

          18 февраля, 2012 at 18:27

I understand how you feel as sometimes the game does feel like it wants you to screw up…when that is about to happen changing to a counter strategy for the next game can help. I see it as a result of the opposition sitting back due to your form and soaking up the attacks, but if you counter them then they will be far more open.

          • dave

            22 февраля, 2012 at 17:18

Hey Darren, so i followed your advice, and the results were amazing! less aggressive talks, more counters, strengthened defence with kara(finally, but at 10mil -ouch!), and i finished the season in 6th place, got to league cup final, and won the FA cup! i’ve learnt to have more patience in games, letting the team settle into play without making drastic changes and they’re always pulling goals back after conceding early. my most satisfying win wasn’t the FA cup, but crushing man utd 4-1 in the league, which was especially sweet given how they used to wipe the floor with me. can’t thank you enough, you totally deserve an award for your work. cheers!

Hi Darren im loving your posts at the moment. However I was just wondering how you manage to play through your seasons so quickly. Do you watch all your games or do you holiday through some?

    • Darren Smith

      18 февраля, 2012 at 18:30

I actually don’t get through my games very quick to be honest, I take an age researching the team and my squad etc. The reason I can post so often is because I play the game like a drug addict!! :) I must play for around 3 hours every week night and at least 8 hours on a weekend.

I actually never used an AMC so that was no problem. I used those players mentioned on either wing cutting inside and sold RVN. But to be honest all those players were sold within 3 seasons as I wanted different types of players.

Either you are in a different patch or don’t have the same database size and countries loaded as me (large database, Italy, England, Spain and Brazil loaded, also Argentina.)

I see you have a bunch of non EU players in your squad (Vrsaljko, Badelj, Kovacic, Kagawa, Romario, Lodeiro, Fierro). How do you register them all at the same time since you can only register 3 non EU players in La Liga?

    • Darren Smith

      26 июня, 2012 at 12:05

I’ve already answered this above. I don’t register them all at same time, I register half for the league and half for Champions League/Europa League…also use the cup competition to offer game time. They aren’t non-EU after 2 years anyway.

What attributes do you look for in the support cm role?

    • Darren Smith

I look for a very well rounded CM but one with good defensive attributes also. They need to be fairly strong mentally with good tackling, passing, technique and pace helps too.

when i use Maestro Ugo traning i dont know what all letters stand for like if i want to use the training schedule for left/right defenders which one should i pick and also for Central defenders. since there is only short letters like ST,AMC etc

I’m going by memory here, but I think these are Maestro Ugo’s training schedules:
      DC or CD: Central Defenders
      FB: Fullbacks or left/right defenders
ST (fast): poacher type strikers who use speed and dribbling to score goals. This may also be a good schedule for inside forwards.
ST (target?): targetman strikers who use height and strength to score.
WG: wingers — may not be best for inside forwards as I’m pretty sure this schedule doesn’t include much shooting training.
AMC: Attacking midfielders or midfield playmaker. If you use this Malaga tactic, this is the schedule you’ll want your attacking playmaker to be on.
DMC: Defending midfielders e.g. ball winning. Focuses more on defence.
      GK: goalkeepers

I’m pretty sure that’s it. You may wish to look at these schedules to see whether they cover what you want the players to be training on as well.

Just a question, I noticed your MCR is a central midfielder (support), whereas your manchelona tactic had DLP (support). Have you noticed any difference? I normally go with a DLP, though I think with the role of CM they go forward and score a bit more.

Your explanation about sums it up…but the point around the change was so that I could sign players better capable in moving about the pitch as opposed to always finding gems with passing, creativity and then defensive stats also.

I noticed that you have Matias Ezequiel Schelotto in your second team Darren. My question is: where did you find him? For me, he was an absolute beast in FM11 playing as a right winger, destroying teams with his strength, speed, stamina and great finishing and heading ability. Sadly, I couldn’t find him on FM12 which was very disappointing.

He plays for Atlanta, the only reason I can think of for you not seeing him is maybe using a small database or not loading the Italian leagues.

Aye, I checked Atalanta but he wasn’t there. However, I’ve now loaded them and so hopefully they will appear in the next month of June on the game. Thanks for that.
