FM 2014 Full Back roles and duties explained

Limited Full Back

  • Knows his strengths and weaknesses and focuses mainly on his defensive duties, rarely going forward into a more attacking role.
  • Can only have defend duty.

Full Back

  • A key player in modern football, having to supplement his traditional defensive duties with overlapping runs down the wing to support forward play and help attacks overload the final third. Although primarily a defensive player, he must be prepared to get forward when the team needs extra width.
  • With a defend duty, the full back will stay back with the defensive line and make simple possession passes either down the flanks or into central midfield.
  • With a support duty, the full back will support the midfield by providing extra width and will look for crosses and through balls when he has the chance.
  • With an attack duty, the full back supplements his defensive duties by overlapping the midfield and providing first-time crosses into the penalty area.
  • With an automatic duty, the full back will switch automatically between defend, support and attack duties according to your match strategies.

Wing Back

  • Usually playing out wide with no wing support, the wing back must take care of all the attacking and defensive duties of both wingers and full backs. In attack he must be ready to run at his man and deliver aggressive crosses, in midfield he must help win the possession battle while in defence he must help close down opponents, block crosses and win back the ball when possible.
  • With a defend duty, the wing back mainly stays deep, but will still cross the ball when he has the time and space to do so.
  • With a support duty, the wing back aims to provide angled through balls from out wide and cross the ball when the opportunity arises.
  • With an attack duty, the wing back aims to overlap down the flank to provide wide support for attacks, run at his man and get crosses in from the byline.
  • With an automatic duty, the wing back will switch automatically between defend, support and attack duties according to your match strategy.

Complete Wing Back

  • Loves to attack, and whilst he is capable of taking care of his defensive duties, his natural inclination is to affect the game in the opposition’s defensive third.
  • Can only have attack duty.

johnny, i bet it took a lot of time to create this and well done, my friend! i think it should help a lot of people. brazil is 3 hours before london’s time so we’re still at work; can’t wait to get home and start playing!

    • comment avatar Johnny Karp October 16, 2013

Yes, it did take a bit of time but I’m very happy that you find it useful. I hope it will help a lot of people indeed.

My FM is downloading at the moment and I needed this to stop myself bouncing off the walls. Thanks for this guide must have been a long task and we’re all really grateful for this continued effort. Playing a tactic with no wingers makes that role of complete wing-back look really tempting…

    • comment avatar Johnny Karp October 17, 2013

No problem at all mate, we love doing what we do.

  • comment avatar nikozolo October 17, 2013

Thanks a bunch Johnny! This should tide me over until work ends! Class as always! Keep up the good work and of course enjoy the game.

PS very much looking forward to the tactic analysis :)

Thanks mate, glad you like it. I’m looking forward to analysing tactics myself :)

  • comment avatar Gaurav Chaddah October 17, 2013

Cheers for this mate, greta work on the site so far, well done. Do you know in the tactics where I can allocate my playmker, target man ect ect?

    • comment avatar Johnny Karp October 17, 2013

You can’t, those settings are gone. Basically if you set a striker to target man role, that’s your target man. Same goes for playmakers.

      • comment avatar auzanaagnar December 20, 2013

what ‘cross to target man’ mean? i don’t even use TM

        • comment avatar Johnny Karp December 21, 2013

Probably means “cross to target man”, if you have one :)

  • comment avatar Herbie76 October 17, 2013

Johnny this is the dogs bollocks, you deserve a huge pat on the back for this..This has saved me from writing all this down on countless bits of paper, well done!!

    • comment avatar Johnny Karp October 17, 2013

Thanks, glad you find it useful.

  • comment avatar Pedro Fontan October 17, 2013

Brilliant Work Johnny as always. Unfortunately i will only get payed in the first of november so i can only get the game then ARGHHH. But i am pretty sure it will be worth the wait.

One thing i found strange when using strikers as Target Man is that in my games their Passing has actually made them better and the ones with better passing stats tend to be more productive. and it is the stat that increases the most. But that’s probably because of how i set up the team or maybe just coincidence.

Any additional good attributes along with they key ones can do nothing but good for a player and his team as well.

    no creativity for regista role??

    • comment avatar Johnny Karp October 25, 2013

Nope, I agree a regista should be creative but the game doesn’t deem that essential.

Could it be possible for you to make these as search filters for FM14, so user could just use player filters to find the player he/she is looking for?

I found one webpage where this is done for FM13. —> http://thefmformation.com/files/file/50-the-fmformations-player-search-filters/
Just to give you an example what i mean by making these as search filters. I downloaded it and i’m going to try it soon in my FM13 save.

And if this has been done by someone already for FM14 then give us a link to it so we can download it and start using them. It would help quite a lot when searching for specific player.

I know it’s going to take quite a lot of time and work to make them, but i’m sure lots of ppl would appreciate that someone has made these filters available.

Thanks in advance no matter you deciding to make them or not. :)

    • comment avatar Johnny Karp October 27, 2013

I could do that, actually I thought about doing something like this while I was writing this post but I wasn’t sure it would be very useful. And seeing that only 500 people downloaded the one you linked to from FM Formation does not ease my concerns, I wouldn’t want to spend loads of time doing something that only a few people would use. I’ll think about it and look for feedback from some other people as well.

        Hi Johnny,

This is great work mate. I’ve put all the player types attributes in filters so guess who can find players very quickly now. Available if anyone wants them.

        Thanks Johnny,

        britpol
