This FM 2014 tactic is called Tiki-Taka and it was put together by Jack, the brains and muscle between the fantastic WorkTheSpace YouTube channel, if you haven’t watched his videos until now you should start as soon as possible! His FM 14 tactic attempts to recreate Barcelona’s real-life tactics, with a false nine striker upfront, a half back in the defensive midfielder position and so on.

Watch the video below to find out all the necessary details about this FM 2014 Barcelona tactic:

I do trust Jack but I thought it would be nice to test the tactic a bit, so I took over Arsenal and employed this tactic for the first 8 matches of the season to see how it works. The results were top notch, eight wins out of eight:

FM 2014 Barcelona Tactic

I have to say that I enjoyed watching the team play, always fluid and attacking but safe at the back as well. The average number of clear cut chances created per match was around 3, which is great. On the other hand the opponents rarely created clear cut chances, for instance Chelsea had 1 while we had 3 at Stamford Bridge.

My preferred line up was as follows: Szczeszny — Sagna, Koscielny, Vermaelen, Monreal — Flamini — Ramsey, Wilshere — Cazorla, Ozil — Giroud. The top goal scorer was Giroud, 8 goals in 7 starts, Ozil bagged 5 while Cazorla contributed 3 goals and 5 assists. Mesut Ozil had the highest average rating, a stunning 8.07 as he also delivered 4 assists in addition to those 5 goals.

If you want to download the tactic and test it yourself you can find the link and instructions on how to install in the video description here.

great stats ey? have you had any success in creating your own tactics johnny? i’ve started with a semi professional club so i haven´t had enough time to make the team comfortable with my ideas and, thus, haven’t had much success as of yet.

Not yet, between researching and writing the posts here and on the scouting network, answering loads of comments on the social networks, there was little time left to actually play the game :( Hope to catch up during the weekend and try to develop a tactic.

Great tactic it seems, definately gonna give it a try!
I have a question though, as im trying to create Bayern munichs 4-1-4-1. Isnt Toni kroos an enganche, or what role would you say he has in Bayern?

    Saw the video. 2 questions.

    1. Why higher tempo? Barcelona plays with slow tempo. Granted, the tempo has increased after Martino became the manager, but still no point of using «Higher Tempo» instruction.

    2. Deep lying playmaker? Don’t they tend to hit the ball long? Should it be use with a team that always tries to keep the ball in ground as much as possible?

    • Johnny Karp

      20 октября, 2013 at 17:52

If you have watched the video I guess it would be normal to address those questions to the man who made the video, that is if you want him to reply.

I find it as a very good tactic for my Tottenham team, although I have huge issues with scoring…

hello ! Can you put the individual instruction please

  10. Simon W

    21 октября, 2013 at 16:35

I find it frustrating that I cant seem to tell my advanced playmaker to make more risky passes, or my winger to dribble more often. Any answers?

    • Johnny Karp

      21 октября, 2013 at 16:44

The advanced playmaker takes makes risky passes by default, same as wingers dribbling. That is why those instructions are not available for those roles.

      • Simon W

        21 октября, 2013 at 19:23

Thanks Johnny, I wondered. I prefer though the old tactics at present as with new one I’m not sure if the specific instructions work….e.g. I always set Sterling as direct cross from byline and shoot less often. This in a team that played a low tempo short passing game and you could see it worked, with fm14 not so obvious. Still, i need to get used to new system and also this is beta version (which is pretty good).

        • Johnny Karp

          21 октября, 2013 at 20:31

Some things in the beta don’t work as they are supposed to, that is normal. Beyond that I guess all of us will have to go through some sort of an adaptation period with the new tactical module.

How do u recommend to set up the training to get the most out of this tactic?

    • Johnny Karp

      21 октября, 2013 at 18:22

I don’t think you need to set up the training depending on the tactic but rather depending on what your squad needs. But with this tactic you need players that can handle the ball well, so if your squad is lacking in that area you might want to focus on ball control for a while.

      • Peter A Berg

        21 октября, 2013 at 20:23

If you already have those qualities inn your squad, how should u train generally and for match preparation to get the full potential of this tactic ?
I`ve herd that training and tactic has a context and that both is important to get your squad preform well, so if have any other ideas or tips for me about the training it would be nice?

        • Johnny Karp

          21 октября, 2013 at 20:28

Normally you should leave general training set on «balanced». As for match preparation, you should obviously prepare that tactic and then see what you can modify depending on your next opponent. For instance if you face a team that is known for scoring from set pieces, training defending set pieces in match preparation might be a good idea. Or if your team doesn’t seem to play the way you want in attack, you could train attacking movement in match preparation.

How about a Version 2 ? I like this one but i feel like there is room for more … Especially Messi his role isn’t perfect

    • Johnny Karp

      22 октября, 2013 at 10:26

There will probably be a second version but I think we have to wait for the full game to test it properly.

  14. Sven

    22 октября, 2013 at 10:43

There are too many crosses during a game. But it’s probably cuz of the beta.

    • Johnny Karp

      22 октября, 2013 at 10:47

Yes, there are a few things that will probably be corrected in the final game.

    22 октября, 2013 at 22:57

I wonder if this tactic works on a 4-2-3-1 formation with three AM(C)?
I`ve tried this with this tiki take tactic and put one other instruction in. I do not have any wingers so instead of using allow wide players to swap, I putted in exploit the middle. but I also want full backs that can be involved in the attack sometimes to. What think and do have any ideas or tips for me?

And have seen that the players is disappointed with the amount of exercise, and I wonder if that can have something to say about the players moral, confidence or something like that?
It will of course been higher chance for players to get injured if have high intensity on the training but can it affect the players in other ways to?

    • Johnny Karp

      23 октября, 2013 at 06:52

It might work but you can’t know for sure until you try :) To make the full backs support the attack you have to put them on support duty (at least) with full back role or change the role to wing back, you should see which suits your players. About the training, players that are unhappy with the level of training are not a good thing, you should either lower the intensity or kick out those players who complain. When I’m on average intensity I always transfer list those who complain :)

    23 октября, 2013 at 22:07

Wich roles did you use on your Arsenalplayers? Struggeling with my Arsenal team, and want to try this tactic. Giroud as a false 9?

    • Johnny Karp

      24 октября, 2013 at 05:36

Giroud as false nine, Ozil and Cazorla on the wings in most matches. I have also employed Walcott as false nine on occasions, when I wasn’t playing him on the right flank.

      • Shearer

        24 октября, 2013 at 16:34

So you used the tactic exactly like it is? Walcott, Podolski as winger support when they play? Will try this. Thanks

        • Johnny Karp

          24 октября, 2013 at 17:59

Yes, I used it like it is because I wanted to test it. Podolski on the left flank, yes.

          • Shearer

            24 октября, 2013 at 18:33

Thanks:) Will give it at try

          • Shearer

            26 октября, 2013 at 12:04

Not to much success. After 31 matches 5. in the PL. Knocked out of CL in first round. Only scored 36 goals in 31 matches. Lost against teams like West Ham, Norwich, Swansea. The players rating are high tough. Biggest problem is the lack of goals. Giroud is my topscorer in the league with 8 goals.

Doesnt work with any teams I try it with. Tried it with Benfica and Shaktar Donesk.

      4 декабря, 2013 at 22:16

It hasn’t been working with Real either. In fact it has been absolutely awful. I’ve been embarrassed by some average to poor teams.

      • Johnny Karp

        5 декабря, 2013 at 12:08

This tactic was made by Jack on the early beta version so I doubt it will work now, four patches later.

    • Johnny Karp

      2 ноября, 2013 at 07:50

Seems it’s a technical problem with your game, my advice is to ask for help on the official SI forums.

  19. Alexey Petrushchenkov

    3 ноября, 2013 at 13:53

Trying tactic with gunners. Nacho — Kos — Mert — Sagna; Zokora (or Flam); Wilshere — Arteta; Poldi — Ozil; Giroud. Got a problem with too many moments near my goal. They don’t convert into goals though, but even Cardiff managed to strike 20 times (10 on goal) on Emirates…
Do you really think that Half-Back role is worth it?

  20. Antonio Rivas

    8 ноября, 2013 at 10:19

Trying it with Arsenal and now i’m on 14th on the Premier league :( (Line up: Sczency — Baines — Suotic- Mertesacker-Sagna- Arteta-Ramsey-Pastore-Ozil-Walcott-giroud)

  21. Chester Bong

Is there anything that can be done to severely cut down long shots? They really waste the ball by shooting from 40 yards when they don’t need to..

    • Johnny Karp

      8 ноября, 2013 at 18:54

Work ball into box team instruction, shoot less often player instruction, that’s about all you can do about that.

  22. Servognome

    9 ноября, 2013 at 04:24

I had some success with Arsenal using this tactic. It played even better with some role changes to fit the players — Giroud as supporting TM instead of F9 and Arteta as Regista instead of HB.

    • Johnny Karp

      9 ноября, 2013 at 09:42

That’s good to hear, some slight role changes should be made most times in order to suit your players.

      • Servognome

        10 ноября, 2013 at 22:41

Started noticing with Regista my defense was leaking more goals, went back to HB to keep things secure. Love this strategy :)

Johnny your Barcelona tactic for FM 13 is maybe the best tactic I have played in the last 5 years. Are you going to be developing some new ones soon? I’d love if you could recreate (with success) something like Dortmund’s fast paced 4-2-3-1?

    • Johnny Karp

      9 ноября, 2013 at 15:10

I am currently working on a tactic, should be ready in a day or two. It’s a 4-3-3 (4-1-2-2-1) with short passing.

      • Darren

        9 ноября, 2013 at 15:54

        Awesome, excited to see it!

Can you create Arsenal tactics please ? I hope you will create it for me .

    • Johnny Karp

      9 ноября, 2013 at 15:14

I don’t create tactics for a specific club, I try to create tactics that would work for more than one team. I will release a new tactic in the following days, it should work for Arsenal as well.

      • Muhamad Aidiel

        9 ноября, 2013 at 15:16

Usually Arsenal use 4-3-3 (4-3-2-1) with attacking style .

    10 ноября, 2013 at 11:52

I am struggeling atm, it could be because its still only 3 league matches played and one champions league match, but i played 0-0 against Wham at home, Losing against Chelsea away 0-3. played 1-1 at home against P ferreira Portugal CL qualifier.
    I will keep you updated.

    • Johnny Karp

      10 ноября, 2013 at 12:13

Any tactic needs time and preparation, most times you will get disappointing results early on. But you have to watch the matches and pay attention to what works and what doesn’t, results don’t always tell the true story of what happened in a match.

      • arsenal4marcus

        10 ноября, 2013 at 12:22

I understand, i have played 3 matches in the EPL and have scored 0 en have conceded 6 and have 2 points.

        • arsenal4marcus

          10 ноября, 2013 at 12:35

          • Johnny Karp

            10 ноября, 2013 at 12:40

Something is obviously going wrong there and you’re in the best position to see exactly what (how you concede goals, creating chances and so on).

          • arsenal4marcus

            10 ноября, 2013 at 12:44

I know mate, i am playing in the same formation as you did with Cazorla on the left and Ozil on the right and Giroud upfront

    11 ноября, 2013 at 04:43

Hello Mr. Karp, I have been testing this tactic with limited success. What do you think of it? Your Barca tactic for FM13 was awesome. I won things easily with somewhat not particularly good teams or players. I find this version a little too unbalanced for my taste (the different roles of the wing backs, center midfielders and inside forward/winger). I would be very interested to see your version of the FM14 Barca tactic in the near future. Keep up the good work!

  28. arsenal4marcus

    11 ноября, 2013 at 11:10

Its strange Johnny, because this tactic has been tested with Arsenal, and i am currently playing with the same eleven as mentioned in the post above, I am really struggeling and currently also losing against Anderlecht at home with 0-2, nevertless this is a great tactic but it is not working yet.

    • arsenal4marcus

      11 ноября, 2013 at 11:34

I have just played at home against Birmingham and i had 8 shots on target they had 18 and i also didnt have more of the ball.

      • arsenal4marcus

        11 ноября, 2013 at 11:42

after 6 matches in the EPL i have lost 3 won 1 and draw 2 0-0 goal difference 3-9

        • Darren Smith

          11 ноября, 2013 at 11:47

Why don’t you just try Johnny’s tactic then? This is the link https://www.footballmanagerstory.com/best-fm-2014-tactics-surprising-4-3-3/

The tactic in this post is not done by Johnny, he simply tested it, there have been many ME changes since then and if you want full advice on this tactic here you’d have to ask the actual author who is mentioned in the post and where to find him. In my experience, when a tactic isn’t working for that long and has no signs of working, it probably won’t work for you full stop and its time to try something new.

          • arsenal4marcus

            11 ноября, 2013 at 11:55

I know, i will try another tactic, because i am already almost fired. thanks for the help all!

  29. Tehshort

    12 ноября, 2013 at 16:10

First 23 matches played, and i have not lost in a single game, furthermore, it seems im keeping the opposition from scoring, in the league, only two goals are scored on my team ;-)

    2-0 against Real hehe

I love this tactic, BUT i do however set opposition Instructions myself, and i think this is as much a part of the total closure of my goal (I have not changed the core team!)

      • Johnny Karp

        12 ноября, 2013 at 16:15

Well done, congratulations! If you want you can share your opposition instructions strategy (if there is a pattern you use) for the other readers, might be useful for some.

        • Tehshort

          12 ноября, 2013 at 20:47

I used another guide from a different site (not sure what the rule is about sharing other sites here?!)
But generally i look through the opposition..
          I always close down
          1. Top assist player
          2. Top striker
          3. Find the defender who is poorest in passing and first touch and close him down.
          4. Press the above players to the weakest foot (if they are one footed..)
          5. If they play wingers, i thigh mark them always..
If they are poor at Technique and dribbling i tackle hard on the player (specially those with poor bravery)

This is from the guide i read, where i learned alot from setting the opposition instructions..
And the above is a pattern i always use, and it seems to force them to make poor shots, and bad play up the field, and it gives me great ways to get through the defense..

Hope it makes sense, else i’ll post the link or a better written guide to what i do..

          • Johnny Karp

That’s great, I use almost the same tactic as you in my FC Porto save, but with some different details. For instance, i think it would be a lot better if you used Iniesta as an advance playmaker as you’re using, but instead of supporting, i advice you to play him as an attacking advance playmaker.

If you decide to use my advice, let me know how thinks worked out for you.

Keep up the good work ;)

Can you create a 4-2-3-1 with 2 defensive midfielders that would play attacking soccer and not concede easily?

    • Johnny Karp

      19 ноября, 2013 at 07:02

I wish I could :) Jokes aside, I am working on such a tactic but so far testing doesn’t go so well on the defensive side, we score lots but also let in a few too many.
