If you want to achieve success in Football Manager 2012 you need good players, that’s the first thing. But having good players is not enough because those players have to train properly  in order to perform well on the pitch and that’s where coaches come in. A winning team needs good coaches and I’m going to help you understand how you can find the best coaches in Football Manager 2012. This is a simple step by step guide that can be very useful even for beginners.

Step 1 – Search

The first thing that you have to do is go to the staff search screen. That’s easy: just click on your name in the top navigation bar, then move your mouse cursor over “Search” in the drop-down menu and then click on “Staff”  in the new menu that pops up.

Step 2 – Filters

Once you reach the staff search screen you will have to filter the available staff to narrow down your search. First make sure that you check the box that allows your assistant to filter out the unrealistic target and then add the following attribute filters: Determination, Level of Discipline and Motivating. These three mental attributes are essential for any good coach and my recommendation is to sign coaches with at least 10 for each of these attributes and even more if you manage a top team.

Step 3 – Specialists

My recommendation is to have at least 5 coaches, 2 fitness coaches and 2 goalkeeping coaches and assign them according to their attributes in your training screen by clicking on the “coaches” tab. The goal is to have as many stars as possible for each training category.

Last but not least, here are the coaching attributes that are important for each training category:

Aerobic - Fitness

Strength - Fitness

Shot Stopping - Goalkeepers

Handling - Goalkeepers

Tactics - Tactical

Ball control - Technical (primary) + Mental

Attacking - Attacking (primary) + Tactical

Defending - Defending (primary) + Tactical

Shooting - Technical (primary) + Attacking

That’s how it’s done, let me know if you have any questions or if you need more details.

P.S.: This is just the first post of a series of “how to” FM 2012 posts that I want to publish and I am looking forward to any suggestions of topics that you would want me to cover.

  1. Hi Johnny,

This is great and I have just started a new save as well so I will use this to see if I can improve my fortunes on the pitch.

I have just finished a save were I was Man Utd and I did really well for four Seasons then all the players that I new about were old and pretty poor.I would like to know how to set up a really good scouting network so that I can get good players in before there value goes up and I have to spend a fortune to acquire them. I use the Y2G model but never seem to reap the full benefits.

PS; love your current save :)

    • Get some good scouts, make sure you scout Brazil as I’ve found a few cheap regens who are gems there :)

If I’m not wrong the regen date for Germany is something like the 10th of March, and Spain soon after (basically 3 months before the FM2011 regen dates). Italy is also around that time, I’ve found great regens there as well. If you get in early, you can sign the players before they sign a contract, so you only have to pay a low fee if they want to join you. Basically pick up players with good potential, but also check out their stats to see if they’re what you want. High determination and work rate are important, if a player has great stats but low determination get someone with high determination to tutor them. I think Darren should just write a guide on it :)

Scouting european international U19s, and a few of the U19/U18 leagues will also help, along with roaming scouts who are set to find young players. 2 of my best regens are norwegians, also cheap, probably from a roaming or international U19 scout. As you can see I focus on Europe mostly.

    • I will do a future post on scouts, stay tuned ;)

  2. Wow this is a good guide. I still use the handbook to help me find scouts as well. I can’t wait to see your other guides that are coming up.

  3. What you’ve put is great when you’re playing with a club that doesn’t put wage restrictions in the way. What I found when I started with Torquay was that I couldn’t really find affordable coaches very easily. I made a mistake my first season, and only really worked out a good approach for the second season. I then looked for coaches who had good attributes for whichever training category I was looking for, and then tried to pick out those who had a decent combination of determination, motivation and discipline.

Jody Morris is a particular example, who is 4 star rated for Ball Control, but only has the dmd stats of 12, 9 and 12, has 20 in mental and 16 in technical. He is easily affordable for clubs with tight finances. Once my finances are much better, I’ll be able to search based on their DMD attributes, as they seem to be the coaches demanding the highest wages.

  4. Very useful!

The first thing I usually do is to get as many coaches as I can to boost my training schedules. Some how I always remember what to look for in each coach!

I am too intrigued to see the other guides, you can never stop learning as they say!

I would love a guide on how to win playoff games. :)

  5. Good guide Johnny and I do exactly the same as you I think. I enter the staff role, the key ‘DMD’ attributes at minimum of 10 and then minimum of 15 for the technical, attacking… attributes. I then lower the attributes accordingly if wages are a problem. Anyway, can’t wait to see your next subject, it can be tough to understand massive guides as your brain can only process so much info, but these snippets work well.

  6. It is a very helpful post and I’ll try to do exactly as you advised here and I hope my players will be able to train better.
I hope you’ll continue successful this series of tutorials.

  7. Hi Johnny
I’ve been using the worng filters the whole time, no wonder my traing sucks!

Next guide: how to play like Johnny and score loads of goals :)

  8. Hey Johnnyl,

First of all, thank u for one more brilliant quick guide! I’ve being around for the last Couple of month’s, and this is my first Reply ever. Let me tell u that I’ve read every single post in this site, and I’m still amazed!!!! Now, about the guide (it’s brilliant), I read somewhere, something about this, but the target’s for coach’s atributes (mental ones) where Determination, Adaptability, Lvl of Discipline and Motivation. If u target to have @ least a total of 60 point’s in this you than find good Training skill’s let’s say Fitness on a minimum of 18 and you have a 5 star rated Coach on that category. I tried already, in some top club’s (Sporting Clube de Portugal & Flamengo) and it work’s. Just wanted to take the opportunity to share this with the community in a appreciation for wonderful job that you guy’s do here. I wouln’t survive in FM for more that a couples of hours if it wasn’t for you guy’s, and now I cant survive with out FM :)

    Cheers

    • Hi David, thanks a lot for the comment. I don’t think that adaptability is that important but I will look into it.

      • I again,

Just wanted to let you that I just tried to do exactly what you said and it works perfectly. Luckly I just got promoted with Boavista and went fro 3 to 12 coach’s alowed and all of them are 4 stars rated, what in my opinion it’s great for a LLM. So it seem’s that adaptability is out of my requirement’s. So once again thank you…

        Cheers M8

  9. Normally I am a greedy one, so I search for the 3 attributes at 15 first with the primary training attribute too (the default is 15 after all :P )

Should be a helpful article, I used to search for man management instead of motivating last year :( , perhaps we could make a coaches list too?

  10. Hi Johnny

What about Physios? Would the same search filter apply or is it not really necessary for that role?
    Cheers.

  11. hi johnny,

Good and usefull tips man, i will wait for your next ”how to ” and also your story.
    Good luck

  12. I always search for staff with high ‘DMD’, it’s so important in the latest versions of FM. I’ve begun to understand recently and now I’m signing the very best of coaches that are available to my team. Jake’s guide last year helped me tremendously ;)

Really looking forward to more of these guides, cheers Johnny!

  13. Thanks a lot Johnny. Backroom matters are always so mysterious and I am one who constantly rotates coaches in and out of my set-up. Good to see a concrete guide. One question though, I seem to notice that shooting coaches rely on three stats technical, attacking, and mental. Can you verify this?

  14. Thanks for the heads up although I already knew must of it. However Johnny is there any benefit of having more than one coach for each training catagory?

  15. Nice little guide that, always struggled with optimising my coaches to get my players to their full potential.

This will help alot in the future for me cheers mate!

  16. Hey, im using mancity, some of my players are complaining about their high traning workload. if i reduced their workload im scared that it will affect other players too.what shoud i do?

    • Some of my players are complaining about that too, but just a couple of players. So my advice is to ignore the ones who complain if you have just one or two of those or change your training schedules if there are too many players that are complaining.

  17. Hi, thanks for your suggestions! it would be great if you can also post something about how to “read” the match, meaning what are the best orders to be shouted on the pitch to your players..I have some idea but I’d like to know what do you think about it. Thanks in advance’

  18. quick one. does it matter on the number of staff you have? like how many scouts should i have? i have about 6 which salaries are about £25k together. and about 6 youth coaches.
im new to FM so not sure on everything yet, it’s jsut im loosing £12m a month !!

    • ignore the amount of coaches, didn’t see you’ve wrote it up there. but if you could help with my other problem i’d appreciate it, £12m a month profit loss doesn’t sound good!
